Question

Upgrade from MS SQL 2000 to MS SQL 2005/8

Asked by: PresageSolutions

Hello All,

We have a few databases of around 12 GB which are on MS SQL 2000. We are wanting to upgrade the database server to avoid the End of life issues with MS SQL 2000. Here are my questions related to this --

1. What is the current End of life date for the support on MS SQL 2000 ?
2. In the current databases we have jobs, database packages, DTS packages and the databaes on the current MS SQL 2000.
3. Now what care do we need to take care while upgrading to MS SQL 2005 or MS SQL 2008.

We know for a fact that upgrading the database packages to MS SQL 2005 is an issue.

Can you all please help chip in with your answers and guidance on this ?

Thanks!
Nitin K

The migration isn't too difficult to do.  You can just backup the databases and restore them.  For the other aspects...it may be worth it to you to consider hiring a dba consultant to do it for you.

I'm currently in the middle of migration from 2000 to 2008 and it has a migration tool to take the DTS packages from DTS to SSIS.  That part I haven't had any luck with, maybe it's not made to work with complex packages.  But I would say be prepared to recreate these in SSIS from scratch we have to here and doing all 70 of them isn't fun.

yeah, that is the major problem w/ the upgrade from DTS to SSIS...it doesn't translate well.  You're better off just using the same DTS packages (they're in the legacy folder).

I would suggest you to take a look at the below links which i have used while migrating DB's from Sql 2000 to Sql 2008..AS Gallitin said the most difficult part is migrating the DTS packages to SSIS and before you start migration its always better to know how to use SSIS
