The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Has Terminal server on 2003 Server broken SQL ? Msg 7391, Level 16, State 2, Line 4

Asked by sqlsqlsql in MS SQL DTS, SQL Server 2005, Windows 2003 Server

Tags: Terminal Server, 2003 Server, SQL 2005, SQLNCLI, Distributed transaction

We have a local 2003 server (SERVERA) connected to a linked remote 2003 server (SERVERB) via VPN link - both machines running SQL server 2005.

Distributed transactions are triggered by the local server and data between local and remote servers is synchronised this way.

We have recently installed Terminal services to replace Remote Access Administrator and this has created an error when running a SQL query as follows:

Running the query:

SET xact_abort ON

GO

BEGIN DISTRIBUTED TRANSACTION

SELECT * FROM SERVERA.CompanyPublic.dbo.tests

COMMIT TRAN

GO

Produces the error:

OLE DB Provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server SERVERB " returned message "No transaction is active.".

Msg 7391, Level 16, State 2, Line 4

The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server SERVERB" was unable to begin a distributed transaction.

All was working fine until we installed terminal service on the local server. We have now removed terminal services again but the problem remains. We are assuming the issue is related to configuration of the local server, presumably aftermath of installing terminal services.

We have installed all hotfixes and service pack, and run all windows updates. We have ensured Network DTC is installed and security properly configured. We have run DTCtest.exe and it runs successfully without errors. Have checked all the contents at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=873160

Any idea what we can do to recover from this error?
