Question

SSRS Report Auto Refresh Property

Asked by: sVirgo

Can I give a parameter in Auto Refresh property? I tried using
=Parameter!x.value
It gives an error  "is not a valid value for Int32".
Is there any way I can allow user to refresh it dynamically. or could it be a part of url while calling report through http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/reportserver/

The parameters would be refreshed everytime the report is refreshed via the web viewer.

You could setup an auto refresh, but believe this only relates to a data refresh, not parameter.

When you set up the report in BI, under Parameters window there is an option to set up "Dfault Values". Set the default value for your report there and when ever the report is auto refreshed the default values will be used that way you will not loose the parameters during the referesh.

This way there is only one little this that annoys me. Everytime I open the report in report manager to run it, it will run the with the default values and give you are report before you can run for parameters that you wanted to. But if you report does not run for too long then the experience might be seemless for the users.

Does this helps?

No, my question is specific to Report->Properties Screen->Auto Refresh where it allows to enter an integer value. I want to give control to user to change it by passing parameters in URL to Auto Refresh

Auto Refresh - to refresh report after n seconds. I can set manually by putting 300 which is 5 minutes but I want to give flexibility to user to change this time.
Please see attached jpg file.

I am sorry, but I do not think it can be dynamic.  That property cannot take an expression for its value and I have not seen a command or parameter that can be passed in the URL to control it either.

Thank you pssandhu! Though this is not a complete solution. It helped me to look into rdl file which have Auto Refresh property if Auto Refresh is changed from 0 to some other integer then it become part of rdl file.
Now, how can I change programattically rdl file to allow user. Could I change writing some script to change xml(as rdl is xml file).
I have one top level report which asks server name and auto refresh frequency and then launch appropriate SSRS (rdl) file. Before launching subreport URL, I could run some custom code from report properties code when my control is still in top SSRS report.
------------------------------
part of code from xxx.rdl file
<AutoRefresh>60</AutoRefresh>
  <Language>en-US</Language>
  <TopMargin>1in</TopMargin>
</Report>

That post just points out the same thing I was trying to tell you, it can't be done.  The main part of the post just tells you about the auto refresh feature, yes it is part of the RDL, but that does not mean it can be changed.  Here is one of the followup questions and the answer given there also:
    I would like to be able to switch the auto refresh function OFF with a button/select/whatever on the report itself. Is there any way to do this. I have searched everywhere.

    Nope...This is directly in the RDL, so there's no way to really change it. Sorry.

Can not we modfy Rdl file as it is xml.

I am calling 2.RDL from 1.RDL. So I will show a parameter to such as Refresh Interval and when a user enters that Refresh Interval then before launching 2.RDL I will run code.FunctionA(Parameters!RefreshInterval.value) which will replace value in 2.RDL file.

I don't know the answer yet.

I am trying this code but not successful yet, but I saw file is getting modified and I hope I will have solution soon.
This is the code I have written in SSRS report code.

Function ChangeValue() as integer
Dim oFS as object
 oFS = CreateObject( "Scripting.FileSystemObject" )
 Dim sFSpec as object
sFSpec  = oFS.GetAbsolutePathName( "C:\Work\1.3.4\Report Project6\Report Project6\Report2.rdl" )
 Dim sCName as object
sCName  = CreateObject( "WScript.Network" ).Computername
Dim oRE as System.Text.RegularExpressions.Regex
 oRE = new System.Text.RegularExpressions.Regex("(<Auto Refresh>)(\w+)(</Auto Refresh>)")
 Dim sXML  as object
 sXML    = oFS.OpenTextFile( sFSpec ).ReadAll()
  oFS.save( sXML)
return 1
End Function

CGLuttrell, though SSRS directly does not allow us to modify Auto Refresh Property but I think we can do this way.

ok, yes, if you can modify the RDL before it is called you could control that feature, but that may be a real trick if the report is loaded into the Reporting Services database, you will have to reload the updated RDL.  I am real interested to see if you can get that to work.  Good luck.

by: pssandhuPosted on 2009-07-24 at 10:42:52ID: 24937220

Agreed! I think your onto something here using the SSRS API to configure your RDL's. I haven't used them myself but when you have access to the functionality and execution of your RDL's, it should be possible. I have been trying to see if somone runs a report from the Report Manger, can we modify the URL request to give them flexibilty but as it has been pointed out, there is no way though interface.

I hope it works out. Keep us postet!

Here is the code I am using now and file is getting updated-
Function ChangeValue() as integer
Dim myStreamReader As System.IO.StreamReader
myStreamReader =System.IO. File.OpenText("C:\Report1.rdl")
Dim strContents As String
Dim strContents1 as String
strContents = myStreamReader.ReadToEnd()
strContents1 = strContents.Replace("<AutoRefresh>60</AutoRefresh>","<AutoRefresh>120</AutoRefresh>")
myStreamReader.Close()
Dim myStreamWriter As New System.IO.StreamWriter("C:\Report1.rdl")
myStreamWriter.Write(strContents1)
myStreamWriter.Close()
return 1
End Function

Now I have to use MatchExpression instead of writing code this way. The code seems working.

The rdl file when deployed is embedded into the ReportServer DB. This is a fairly easy DB to reverse engineer, so if you can find the appropriate text you can update it. The reports are not run directly from the rdl file.

Obviously this has inherent risks! And it's not supported by Microsoft (but then what's Microsofts support worth anyway ;)  )

It pointed me to direction to explore more and then I have mentioned a partial solution myself. Though that is still not complete, I will update once I will finish up my work.
