Link provided to an MSDN article dealt directly with my question, and was nearly complete as a solution. I adapted and tested the code in the MSDN article and was able to print an rdlc-based report directly to a selected printer. There was one additional problem to overcome and that was an error received related to the selected printer not being recognized as valid - even though it was indeed the current installed printer. The following link helped me get over that additional hump to be able to print to any valid selected printer - it details the approach of turning off Windows Impersonation just for the scope of the print process:
