Question

Reporting Services - Key not valid for use in specified state

Asked by: thefumbler

Using SQL 2005 and Reporting Servieces I have a similar issue as this post
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Microsoft/Development/MS-SQL-Server/SQL-Server-2005/Q_22939754.html

We changed the password of the service account and it seemed fine.   But it must have been the next boot or two where the SSRS service stopped.   While resetting the password under logon as service works to get the service started, the message about the invalid key persists regardless of what we do.   Tried restoring an older database and the same keys are used so it has the same issue.   If I could delete the keys that would be fine, but after deleting the keys I can't regenerate them - the same error message occurs.

What can I do to avoid a reinstall and reconfig of SSRS?   and will that even resolve it?

I've looked through these links and haven't found much

rrjegan
that link is for SQL 2000.  Rsactivate is not available with SQL 2005.

Thought you are obtaining this error in SQL server 2000.
And you would also get this error in 2000 if you install 2005 in it or do an side by side upgrade from 2000 to 2005.

Kindly check this one out..

This was a clean install of SQL 2005.  kb907665 is for 2000 and does not apply, there is no such file as listed or rsactivate command.

I still can't get this working.

Then I believe you have reinstall SSRS to get it work..

The problem was not solved.

I completely deinstalled the Reporting Services and IIS and painstakingly reinstalled all that (entailing hours and hours of work).   After that, and configuring the Report Service Configuration Manager accordingly, the same error message appears when I try to view the localhost/Reports in the browser.
Error  - Key not valid for use in specified state. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8009000B) (rsRPCError).

Have you applied latest Service Pack SP3 for SSRS and all other engines..

yes

Ideally Reinstalling SSRS and applying SP3 should help fix this issue..
Not sure what is missed over here.

This required opening an incident with Microsoft PSS.  They do not know why it occurred  nor how to correct it but the user/ service used in the SSRS configuration tool would not work.  Creating a completely new administrative user with exactly the same privileges  and creating new databases with the tool successfully got past the error.  After that we were able to use the browser reports interface to reconfigure the db connection strings for the reports and then import all the reports from files.   All in all a very painful experience but its now working.

Thanks for sharing the solution on how it worked now..
But re-installing would ideally fix out this issue..

by: thefumblerPosted on 2009-11-19 at 06:44:42ID: 25860806

Reinstalling with Microsoft Support Services for the 2nd time  did not fix the isssue.  Since it turned out to be a strange windows account permission issue the only reinstalling that might have helped would be drastic...an OS reinstall.
