By the way, I'm running SQL Server 2000 on a Windows 2000 machine.
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI got this message when booting up. Now, I cannot use SQL Server at all. I get the same message when I try to connect to the server. The only recent change has been the installation of MSDE 2000. I cannot uninstall that (fatal error during installation message). Please help! I have this same problem on another machine and tried uninstalling and reinstalling SQL server and it doesn't do any good. It seems to be related to MSDE.

Hi,
Have a look at this link - see if it is relevant.

Meanwhile I will keep looking to see if I can find any solutions.
Cheers
Hello russelshome, that definitely seems similar to what's going on here. I definitely did NOT change the machine name though. The real problem is that the fix that they suggest (uninstall MSDE) will not work here - I get "Fatal Error during installation". I guess that is the first thing that I need to figure out - this problem seems to have been caused by MSDE in some way. Thanks, can you suggest anything else?
I had a similar problem with SQL Server 2000 where I couldn't use it, and at the same time, it wouldn't allow me to uninstall it. In the end I found an article (http://support.microsoft.
Perhaps MSDE 2000 has not installed properly. You could try reinstalling MSDE 2000 and once that's done, see if it will let you uninstall it.
The very last option for you is to rebuild the machine and start with a clean install.
Along with that link I just posted, try here:

Hello adathelad,
Thanks for the suggestions! I wouldn't have thought to try the install for msde again. However, it won't allow me to run the setup for MSDE (the instance name specified is invalid). I searched this error and it seems to simply mean that you can't run the install for MSDE more than once. Since I can't uninstall it, I'm not sure how to get around that...
Hey adathelad,
Well, I got it working! I did the steps that you did and had to take one more. Quite honestly, I'm not sure what combination of things fixed it but you provided the most help and I'll be glad to give you the points.
In case you're interested, I blew away the registry keys for sql server, reinstalled and still could not connect. i took a closer look at the running services and noticed that "Log On As" for the SQL one was STEVE or something, rather than "Local System" like most of the others. I thought i might as well changing it and was shocked when I was able to connect to sql server.
Thanks again for the help, it is very much appreciated
