The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. UDF to show ASCII value & position of any special characters

I need a User Defined Function that would return the ASCII equivalent of any special characters (such as 'control characters') and its integer position within the string. For example, I have a column that contains notes typed in by the user. I don't care about the text that is entered, however if the column contains any carriage returns (CHAR(13)), line feeds (CHAR(10)) or any other special characters other than 'A-Z,0-9, etc.' then I'd like to see the ASCII equivalent and the position where the character was found.

Sample usage 1:

By default the function would look for anything that is not on the standard PC keyboard (eg. 'A-Z', 'a-z', '0-9' and '!@#$%^&*()":?><~`;,./][}{''|\'), however I could also use this function as a template and strip out additional characters to find if needed. For example I could take the base function and modify it to look for only '#' like in the next example:

The 'position' return is based on a starting position of one. SQL Server 2000 may have a zero based starting position which would make the return value for 'position' one less.

Let me know if you need any other details and I would be glad to offer them up. Also a UDF seems like a likely candidate for this solution, however I am open to other reasonable solutions you may come up with.
