Cannot open user default database. Login Failed

Database:
Sql Server 2000
Problems:
1) Cannot restore database.
2) Switched database to single_user and offline and cannot login.

I am trying to restore a database. When I restore, an error message pops up and says that there are other database sessions open and the restore cannot be done. So then i switched the database to single_user mode (using query analyzer) and took the database offline. (alter database <mydatabase> set single_user,offline)

When I did this, I could no longer access the database in enterprise manager, i could not login using a trusted user.

The server is up and running, but I cannot log in. I tried setting the database back to multi_user mode using the isql at the command prompt but that did not make a difference. I tried deleting and adding a new registration. I tried different login methods (windows auth and uname/pwd).

Basically I'm stuck and have no idea what is going on. Not sure how to diagnose and get the database connection back.
