The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Returning results on date range queries even if dates do not exist in table

Asked by 3MAN8 in MS SQL Server

Tags: exists, range, where

Hi Experts...
a quick question for you, if you've got the time.

THE CODE (simplified):
I have a table with a user_id and a date_created column. I have created a sql statement that SELECTs all user_ids within a date range. It looks a little like this:

SELECT user_id, date_created
FROM myTable
WHERE date_created BETWEEN 'date1' AND 'date2'

This works fine. However,

THE PROBLEM:
Not every date has a user_id associated with it. I need to bring back results for EVERY day within the date range, even if that date does not exist in the table.

THE EXAMPLE:
myTable looks like this:

user_id     date_created
1000        15/07/2003
1005        16/07/2003
1015        18/07/2003

and my date range is 15/07/2003 to 19/07/2003. My query returns:

1000,15/07/2003; 1005,16/07/2003; 1015,18/07/2003.

In addition to these results, I also need a default value (eg. 'None') for the dates 17/07/2003 and 19/07/2003, making my results look like this:

1000,15/07/2003; 1005,16/07/2003; none,17/07/2003; 1015,18/07/2003; none,19/07/2003.

THE SOLUTION:
I've had a couple of ideas, neither of which I am completely satisfied with.

1. Use scripting (Coldfusion in this case) to take the results of the query and 'fill in the gaps', placing the new results into a multidimensional array or similar.
2. When making the query, build a temporary table with ALL dates in the range and JOIN it with myTable.

I've half-heartedly written code to demonstrate both these solutions and they both appear to work.

Any better ideas?

Cheers,
3MAN8
