The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Migrating from SQL Server 7 to SQL Server 2000

Tags: sql, 2000, import, server
I want to migrate my database from SQL Server 7 to SQL Server 2000. The database is fairly large (the backup files are about 4GB in size and the MDF file is about 8GB). I have tried 4 times to Import the data from the SQL7 database server to the SQL2000 database server via the import wizard, but the import keeps failing. When I do the Import/Export wizard I have been scheduling the DTS package to run at 2AM, when the company is not using the database heavily. Each time it has failed with the following error in the job history:

Executed as user: DT3\SYSTEM. ...un OnStart:  Copy SQL Server Objects   DTSRun OnProgress:  Copy SQL Server Objects; Scripting objects for Transfer; PercentComplete = 0; ProgressCount = 0   DTSRun OnProgress:  Copy SQL Server Objects; Scripting Logins; PercentComplete = 0; ProgressCount = 0   DTSRun OnProgress:  Copy SQL Server Objects; Scripting Users; PercentComplete = 0; ProgressCount = 0   DTSRun OnProgress:  Copy SQL Server Objects; Enumerating objects for Transfer; PercentComplete = 0; ProgressCount = 0   DTSRun OnProgress:  Copy SQL Server Objects; Enumerating objects for Transfer : 0 Percent Completed; PercentComplete = 0; ProgressCount = 0   DTSRun OnProgress:  Copy SQL Server Objects; 0 Percent Completed; PercentComplete = 0; ProgressCount = 0   DTSRun OnProgress:  Copy SQL Server Objects; Enumerating objects for Transfer : 10 Percent Completed; PercentComplete = 10; ProgressCount = 0   DTSRun OnProgress:  Copy SQL Server Objects; 12 Percent Completed; Pe...  Process Exit Code 1.  The step failed.

I'm not really sure what that means or how else I might be able to migrate the data. Is it possible for me to just do a back up of the SQL7 database and restore it to the SQL2000 database?

Thanks,
Scott

Backup up SQL 7 database and then restore it under SQL 20000. It worked for me.

Install an instance of SQL Server 2000 on your SQL Server 7 server and upgrade the database using 'SQL Database Upgrade Wizard'. Then, you can take a backup of this upgraded database and restore into your SQL2000 database server.

It is a good idea to use the wizard first to upgrade. For me it worked without using upgrade wizard.

If I upgrade the database will it still be accessable to the sql server 7 server? I am doing a test run right now and I will still need the SQL7 database to be running for the next week or two.

In that case, you may want to create another copy of the database and upgrade this copy. You can do this by backing up the database and restoring it on to the same server with a different database name and physical file names.

I don't have enough drive space left on that server to have two instances of that database. (That is one of the reasons we are upgrading the database server). There are several other databases on the server that will be migrated as well, and all of them I have been able to import to the new server but this one.

The way you migrated data you may have lost indexes and statistics so that the performance may be bad. Are those migrated databases performing ok?

It appears that there is some kind of communication problem between my new server and the old server.

Would it work If I created a complete database back up on the SQL7 server and copied the backup file onto and external hard dive then attached the external hard drive to my new SQL2000 server then restored the database from the backup file?

Thanks,
Scott

Yes. That will work.
