Locking issues

Hi,

I have a stored proc that is running every 10 minutes as a job. It is, 1000, at a time applying business rules to a table of about 1.3million records. It takes about 8 minutes to complete the 1000 records.

This is a production database so I need clients to be able to access the data while it is being updated, but this is causing problems.

There are 4 fields that can be searched on in the table. All 4 are indexed. If I search on 3 of the fields (all integer fields) while the proc runs - no problem. But if I search on the 4th (a date type) I get a deadlock error.

I've tried doing this:

Set transaction isolation level Read Committed --I've tried uncommitted too
go
execute StoredProc

Any help greatly appreciated,
