The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Non-aggregated subquery SELECT of column AS alias returns error

Asked by aaron240 in MS SQL Server

Tags: subquery, alias, column

I'm trying to do a SELECT of a set of subqueries and am having a hard time aliasing the column names of non-aggregated objects.

That sounds convoluted so let me give an example of what I mean:

SELECT *
FROM

(SELECT
a.Year,
SUM(a.Column1) as [Sum of a-Column 1],
AVG(a.Column1) as [Avg of a-Column 1],
SUM(a.Column2) as [Sum of a-Column 2],
AVG(a.Column2) as [Avg of a-Column2]

FROM [database].[dbo].[table1] a

WHERE a.bitValue = 1

GROUP BY a.Year) as subQuery1 INNER JOIN

(SELECT
b.Year,
SUM(b.Column1) as [Sum of b-Column 1],
AVG(b.Column1) as [Avg of b-Column 1],
SUM(b.Column2) as [Sum of b-Column 2],
AVG(b.Column2) as [Avg of b-Column2]

FROM [database].[dbo].[table2] b

WHERE b.bitValue = 1

GROUP BY b.Year) as subQuery2 on subQuery1.Year = subQuery2.Year

ORDER BY subQuery1.Year

The problem is that I can't specify an alias for a.Year or b.Year, I get an invalid column name error no matter what I do.  I need the aliasing because in my real life problem my selection of the first column (a.Year/b.Year) from the same tables, so they are named the same and I cannot dump the results of my query into a new table due to duplicate column names.

Ideas?
