With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not?   • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. Maximum number of characters in a MSSQL record

What is the maximum number of characters allowed in a MSSQL 2000 data record?

We have an application that interfaces with another.  Both applications allow the DBA to adjust the field sizes and etc.  The application strongly suggests using their schema update tool rather than using Enterprise Manager.  The other application states in their documentation:

“In SQL Server, records can hold a maximum of 8000 characters. Long memo fields will be reduced (by their application schema tool) proportionately to hold as many characters as will fit after storing the other fields of the record.”

Is this really the case?  Does this mean that we need to "add-up" all of the field lengths and either:

Make sure the total is less than 8000 and/or do like what their tool suggests and adjust any memo fields (varchar) so the overall total is =< 8000.

Can someone confirm this situation and/or shed more light?

Is there a SQL tool that shows the current "character count/total" for a given table so we know if we are maxed out?

What happens if the table is maxed out and we do nothing but keep adding fields?  Do we loose data (truncation)?
