The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Rows to Columns (PIVOT) without aggregation in SQL2005

Asked by J2K5 in MS SQL Server

Hi

I am using SQL Server 2005 and have a table very much like this one:

Table A
---------

Keyfield             Value
--------------------------
1                      This
1                      Is
1                      A
1                      Test
2                      Some
2                      More
2                      Data

Although there are 4 rows for Keyfield '1' in the example, there could be 1 or there could be over twenty.

So of course I can do a SELECT where Keyfield = 1 and get all values for that Keyfield.

How about if I want to return a result like this, though......?

Keyfield            Col001           Col002      Col003      Col004 (.....Col x)
1                     This               Is             A              Test    (.....Value x)

I have investigated the PIVOT syntax in 2005 but can't seem to get it to work in the way I'm after, mainly because of having to specify a fixed amount of columns (when there could be any amount). I could get around this though by dynamically generating the SQL in a Managed SP (for example), but how does me not requiring any aggregation in the results effect the pivot?

I'm open to any suggestion at this point - I can do it a number of different ways but none of them seem as simple as this could (should?) be.

Thanks in advance!

Jim
