Question

how to repair mssql 2000 database

Asked by: princeofem

Hi experts,

I have a data corrupt in mssql 2000 server.  I run backup file and try to delete an original and restore data, but nothing seem to work.  I use this command below and run a repair.  For some reason, it gave me an error like this:

Server: Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 1
Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'to'.

Repair rebuild may cause data to be removed from your database....run this command at your own risk. All I did was take out "to run"

USE master
GO
EXEC sp_configure 'allow updates', '1'
RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE
GO

sp_dboption 'mydata,'single user',true
go
DBCC CHECKDB('mydata',REPAIR_REBUILD)
go
sp_dboption 'mydata','single user',false
go

EXEC sp_configure 'allow updates', '0'
RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE
GO

after run the script above i receive this msg:

Configuration option 'allow updates' changed from 1 to 0. Run the RECONFIGURE statement to install.

I don't know what is mean..Can you please explain and show me what to do next..

Thanks

is there anyone i can rollback data to previous date?

the ONLY way to verify the corruption or non-corruption is CHECKDB.  RUn it.  If you get 0 errors, your problem lies elsewhere...most likely in your application code from what you describe:

>>when i open website i have error msg " The page can not be displayed" <<

Your database is fine.  As is the SQL Server.  Page cannot be displayed is not a SQL Server issue

by: princeofemPosted on 2006-01-21 at 19:59:50ID: 15758987

that is a problem..my original databse is only 450 mb, when i drag sub-forum into parent forum...my database  went up to 910 mb...i checked no error.  I clearcache and stop and start sql and iis service as well.. nothing will help...I know SQL server has options to stop at a particular point in time or transaction mark. This way if you know when or where the database problem occurred, you can recover your database transactions to that particular point prior to the database problem you are trying to avoid. For example if someone deleted all records from a table, you might want to recover your database to the point in time prior to that operation.  I write this script to restore database in particular point.

RESTORE database Northwind
 FROM DISK = 'C:\SQL\Backup\Northwind.bak'
    WITH RECOVERY,
 STOPAT = 'Dec 31, 2005 12:00 AM'

when i run this script, i have an error one or more of the option (stopat) are not supported for this statement.  Would you please verify an above script for me.  Thanks

>>when i drag sub-forum into parent forum<<

These are not SQL Server terms....if whatever they mean relates to adding data then yes, of course the database will be bigger.  Why would you think that stopping and starting a database service will change the size of the databasefiles?

You are trying to solve several different problems here and I am 99% sure none of them are database related, other than the fact that your applciation writes to it

Sorry, but I can't explain it any other way

by: princeofemPosted on 2006-01-22 at 06:09:38ID: 15760229

I'm sorry i did not explain clearly..

I'm running community server forum with sql 2000 server on windows 2003 server.  The forum is working good until i make some change on the forum.   On the forum i have 5 parents forum and 10 sub-forums...Therefore, i was moved serveral sub-forum out to make them become a parent- forum...in the middle of moving the web site stop working immediately,  I checked IIS server and stop and start..Also check application pool to see anything went wrong.  IIS server is woring propably...Then, i check sql 2000 server, i assumed the data would be corrupted when i moved data from sub- forum to parent forum..  Other than that i already let you know as above...

Can I recover database transactions to that particular point prior to the database problem i'm trying to avoid.  I want to roll back data to original, before i moved those sub-forum.

by: Kevin3NFPosted on 2006-01-22 at 06:36:42ID: 15760295

only if you are in Full recovery mode and have full database as well as transaction log backups.  STOPAT is only relevant when restoreing the t-log backup that has the point you want to stopat in it.

Normally at this point we would go through the steps to determine what has happened to database. We know we have to restore the data file that we just deleted. The tricky part is finding the value for the FILE parameter shown in the next step (the RESTORE DATABASE statement). Use the RESTORE HEADERONLY statement to find the information we need. The position column shows us that the backup we took in step 2 titled 'TSQLRESTORE' is in position number 4. Note that many of the columns are compressed, but this is interesting output to look at. In addition to Position and backupname columns, there is date and time information to assist you with determining what backup set you need to restore.

REstore headronly from backupname

use database
restore database name from backupname with file 4
