Help please, this has to be done at the end of the day. 2 Problems. I have excluded any names already that are null.
What besides a negative number or 0 would be an invalid length? I don't get it.
LNAME = SUBSTRING(NAME_CM, 1, CHARINDEX(',',NAME_CM) - 1),
FNAME = SUBSTRING(VT.NAME_CM, CHARINDEX(',',NAME_CM) + 1, LEN(NAME_CM) - CHARINDEX(',',NAME_CM))
Once I can get it to run, what about the names that don't have comma's or are like o'brian?

if ',' is not found in NAME_CM then it returns 0 so that when you subtract 1 you get an invalid length.

I made the assumption that if there is no comma then the entire entry is the last name and there is no first name. Obviously you can change this to suit your needs. FYI you don't need to be precise with the length in SUBSTRING if you want the tail end of a string since it will just take as many as it can until the end if the length value is too large. I also included the LTRIM function to remove any spaces that may have existed between the command and the first name.
