Upgrade SQL 6.5 to SQL 2000

I have an old SQL 6.5 database that is still in use, and we want to upgrade it to SQL 2000.  I was planning to test it using the Upgrade Wizard, but wondered if after I did this would the SQL 6.5 database be available to the user?  I just want to test the upgrade and application first.  

I'm planning to put it on a multi-use SQL 2000 server.  Are there any considerations I need to think about before I try the upgrade?  Unfortunately, my SQL 6.5 experience is very limited, so any recommendations are really appreciated.

You do not want to upgrade during hours where the server will be used.

If you want to test the upgrade, backup the database, move to a test server and upgrade from there.

Take a full back up of your database..
Restore it on  different machine with SQL server 6.5, and then use the upgrade wizard in this machine. Then test your application,
If you find that there is no problem, then either you can use the upgrade wizard on the other machine or make this machine the server

I'm sorry to be slow to get back to this question.  I was called away right after I submitted it, and have just arrived back.   I am accepting the first response because it pointed me in the right direction, and was the first back.  Again, I'm really sorry to leave it hanging for so long, and appreciate all the answers.
