try to set up sql server with the local system, if its successfull then you can change the account that starts sql giving that account admin rights on the server.

while installing sql server developer edition on a Win XP SP2 machine, i receive the following error:

I am logged as administrator, and I leave the default settings in the setup.
Any comments?

Please provide the information from the SQL Setup log which you can locate in the Windows directory. Generally the issue is resolved by granting full permission to the folder and subfolders for the administrators group. However the SQL Setup log can provide the actually error code for why the access is getting denied.
The XP machine is not a part of a domain. It has only one account (the administrator account), and this account is a memeber of the (local) administrators group.
Therefore, there are no folder permissions (by right clicking any folder).
This is what I found in sqlsetup_computerName_sql.
