The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

MSDE 2000 ODBC login failure

Asked by holyfeld in MS SQL Server

Tags: , ,

I'm working with 2 apparently similar systems. Both systems have MSDE 2000 SP4 running on a WinXP SP1 computer. Another WinXP computer in the workgroup connects to MSDE via ODBC. One system has a DHCP server (linksys box) connecting the computers. The other system has hard coded IP addresses.

The DHCP system connects fine. The hard IP system doesn't connect. Today we discovered the Windows Firewall was running on the hard IP network. We disabled the firewall and proceeded to the next error. The remote system failed the ODBC configuration with a Guest login failure.

The two (problem) computers have identical accounts. The default login account for both machines are identical (it seems) and have admin privileges. We can ping the MSDE computer from the remote computer. We can push files back and forth using File Manager.

We've checked with SVRNETCN and CLICONFG and TCP/IP is the default for MSSQL connections.

The ODBC connection uses NT authentication. The check box for "Connect to SQL Server" is checked. The Login ID shows the user ID with admin privileges on both machines. But when "Next" is pressed, we get the login problem. Compounding the issue:

1. I have the system that works, so I can't twiddle things.
2. The system with the login problem is in California (I'm in NC) AND in a sterile environment. I'd like to have a list of things to check before I send my associate into the sterile area. It takes a while to change clothes and get gowned.
3. I leave on vacation tomorrow (Thursday 6/29).

The local machine connects and runs fine.
