The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Migrate Excel spreadsheet to SQL Server and set up front end to do calculations

Asked by TTIT in MS SQL Server

We have a project in which I need to convert a complex spreadsheet with multiple sheets and several hundred different custom
Excel formulas to SQL Server.
I have a very high level of expertise when it comes to IT in general but database work is not something that we do a lot of so I have very little real world experience. This is for a Construction company that uses these custom Excel sheets for job costing and figuring material quantities etc. The main issue is that they have grown from one office to five in the last couple of years and are now needing to access these sheets from multiple offices. As we all know trying to run a 80Mb spreadsheet across a VPN connection is an exercise in futility. The other issue is obviously performance and scalability on a series of spreadsheets like this as well as trying to keep them updated so that ALL the users are seeing the same info. AND the gal that writes these knows Excel inside out and backwards but the big thumbed (but Nice) construction guys using them have a tendency to screw up formulas, enter data in the wrong fields and they are generally pretty intimidating to view and read. We have worked around some of these  issues by installing terminal services on several of the servers and have the users connecting to the servers and running their calcs etc via Excel installed on the servers themselves. This has worked fairly well but I am concerned about users being on the DC/file servers and running applications and all of the potential pitfalls related to that whole scenario. My thought was to be able to convert these sheets to an sql database, and have some sort of front end (access) sheets designed with a simple field that people can enter the data and the guys can run a report. ie how much labor time was quoted vs. how much has actually been worked on the project etc etc. This would also centralize the data into one location and one server instead of five servers and 10 spreadsheets.
I have seen that there are programs out there that will convert an Excel sheet into a SQL database but will this also preserve the functions of the formula's? Any suggestions rom all of you brainy database gurus? Are we off base with migrating to SQL?
Thanks for the help!
