% Disk Time

Hi,
I few months ago I asked a question about % Disk Time and you suggested optimising queries with high reads. Since then the app that sends the queries was reprogrammed to use indexing more efficiently, this was done by the third party. What I see in the profiler now is that a process, say a report, would instead of using a single query that performs a scan create several temporary tables, all seem to be populated efficiently in that the separate execution plans now have low I/O cost, is it possible to quantify the overall impact on the server? The server performance has actually decreased since - %Disk Time is now >200% split fairly evenly between reads and writes.

What's the best way of troubleshooting query performance in a complex environment? Profiling a single process (something ran in the app) on a test server captures hundreds of statements - do you look at them one by one and check each execution plan? If I save that trace to a table and select sum(reads) from it, would that sum be an indicator of performance? The report I mentioned has a sum of 1.5M reads. Profiling the live environment captures tens of thousands of events in minutes, is there a way to separate which processes did what?

DB is 6GB, SQL Server 2000 standard on Windows 2003 standard, 3 GB RAM only 2 used, and the number of concurrent users is normally under a hundred. RAID 1 SCSI drives are 10K rpm.

We'd like to do anything possible to improve the performance, both with hardware and software. I think the true solution is in optimising but please advise if increasing the memory would help. I have seen articles that warn about overheads with AWE, would we see a performance improvement if we increased the memory to 4 GB?
