Grouping Records

What is the general practice for grouping records for previewing/simplicity purposes? For example, I have a need to pull a number of fields from two joined tables. I only want to group on one field, and essentially show a single record to the user, after which they can choose to view other like items.

So, lets say its products and categories. I want to show one product from each category. I would group on the category, but I want to pull numerous other fields to display, but making them all a part of the group by will result in multiple records with the same category, and using an aggregate on all of the other fields would cause confusion in the information returned (e.g., MAX() of one field and the MAX() of another could come from two different records which wouldn't make sense to display).

I assumed the last resort is using a subquery, but if the original query has some complex WHERE conditions, those must also be applied to the subquery as well, correct?

I guess I was looking to see if there is some other common approach to this sort of query that may be easier and more manageable to implement.
