The Solution Rating System

Totally Wacked!!! Same query returning different results every couple of seconds

Attempting to solve a problem where an ORDER BY clause is changing the number of rows returned, I ran into an even stranger problem.  I am running this query from the Query Browser:

SELECT * FROM SymbolStats
WHERE period=30 and DateDiff(dd,GETDATE(),calc_date) = 0

This returns 2499,2500,2501,2502 or 2503 results when I just sit and press execute over and over??????? And none of thoses are correct.  The query below returns the correct number of 2696.

SELECT DateDiff(dd,GETDATE(),calc_date)  FROM SymbolStats
WHERE period=30 and DateDiff(dd,GETDATE(),calc_date) = 0

Note that this table is updated only once a day.  

My original problem was that using different columns in the ORDER BY clause returned different number of results and some returned a floating point error.  

My questions are:

1. How can the same exact query return different number of results from a table that has not changed?
2. How is possible that ordering a query differently will effect the number of results returned?
3. What would causing a floating point exception error when trying to sort by a specific column?
