Upfront disclosure:
I'm a Windows OS and mainstream network geek... Generally speaking, my command of the database world is challenged (at best)
My department has been assigned the task of implementing a new software package (in an unreasonably short period of time) that's SQL based.
I work for a company that has an existing product in place (based on an entirely different platform) that this new solution is going to replace. The company that's providing this "new solution" for us does not offer any suitable solutions to import ANY data from our old system into the new one. Without the option to import certain pieces of data from the old system into the new, I'm looking at 100's of hours of data input to get the new system up to a level where I can start using it.
Extracting data from the old system to a mainstream format isn't a problem... I have to think importing this data into the new database shouldn't be too much of a challenge for the "Right Person" provided they have the appropriate privileges and information to do so. What I'd like to do (based on my current line of thought... which is open for better ideas) is employ a talented SQL person to create an interface for me to import this data into the new system.)
If this means my only option is to pay XYZ contractor to send me a temp for 80 hours at $200 an hour, this isn't a solution for me... I'll bite the bullet and either manually enter the info, or I'll spend my time in the usenet forums and here gathering data to trial and error on my system... then work 120 hrs a week to get the job done...)
That said... I'd much rather find the right person for the job to do the work, maybe provide a little documentation for their work and "HOPEFULLY" give me a little 101 class that could aid me in the future...
Any thoughts?
1. What hourly rate range should I expect to be reasonable for such a project (I realize commercial placement rates vs. private rates may differ GREATLY.)
2. Am I better off seeking private (e.g. 1099 tax form) talent, or should I focus solely on a more corporate answer... e.g. a consulting firm or a temp type firm?
what other concerns should I consider that I haven't identified?
Before you ask: Baltimore, MD
thx!
