Generally I use SQL Enterprise Manager. If you go to the Management branch, then into the activity logging you can find evidence of deadlocks.
By the way, have you been doing periodic backups of your system databases? I have run into a case where a system had been running for years without backups and clearing of old transactions logs on the system databases which slowed the system to a crawl when doing schema or system changes because the transaction log was so large it took a LONG time to add to it.
