SQL Server 2000 Extremely Slow.

SQL Server 2000 Extremely Slow.  When you go to Tools->Restore Database, it takes about 2 minutes for the box to pop up.  Any idea what is going on?  The memory usage is fine, we just added another 2 GB to the box, and it is has 600 MB of free memory now, but it is still slow?

You probably have some record locking occuring possibly with connections that are nearly frozen.  That will grind Enterprise manager to a halt but applications that aren't using the locked tables will behave normally.

The information in the link that twoboats provided are excellent, but it won't take long to look for record locking.  Do that first, then if there are no serious lock conditions, use the link.

There is no Swapping going on.  It is Win 2K Server running SQL Server 2000, it just goes into la la land when you go to do a restore of a file.  How can I check for lock conditions?

Generally I use SQL Enterprise Manager.  If you go to the Management branch, then into the activity logging you can find evidence of deadlocks.

By the way, have you been doing periodic backups of your system databases?  I have run into a case where a system had been running for years without backups and clearing of old transactions logs on the system databases which slowed the system to a crawl when doing schema or system changes because the transaction log was so large it took a LONG time to add to it.
