The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

SQL Server Divide by Zero

Asked by vstack in MS SQL Server, SQL Server 2005

I am developing a sports application.  I keep all the game by game stats.  It's possible for a player to miss the game and simply be entered as 0 or did not play.

The problem is a divide by zero issue.  Since I keep points per game when I display total stats I need to divide the total points by the num games played .   totalpoints/totalgamesplayed.

Since a player who has not played yet will be 0 for totalgamesplayed, hence the idvide by zero issue.

Here is my SQL Procedure:

SELECT T.TeamID, TS.PlayerID, (P.FirstName + ' ' + P.LastName) AS PLAYER, Po.PositionAcronym AS POS, T.LogoFile, T.ShortName AS TEAM,
TS.TotalGamesPlayed AS GP, TS.TotalGoals AS G, TS.TotalAssists AS A, (TS.TotalGoals + TS.TotalAssists) AS P,
cast((Cast(TS.TotalGoals AS Decimal)+ Cast(TS.TotalAssists As Decimal))/Cast(TS.TotalGamesPlayed As Decimal) as decimal(20,2)) AS PPG,
TS.TotalPenaltyMinutes AS PM
From tblTotalStatsPlayer AS TS, tblTeams AS T, tblPlayers AS P
Left Outer Join tblPositions As Po On P.PositionID = Po.PositionID
Where TS.PlayerID = P.PlayerID AND TS.SeasonID = @seasonid
AND P.TeamID = T.TeamID
Order by P Desc, G Desc, A Desc, PPG Desc, POS

Is there a way to test for ZERO in the TotalGames before the divide, let's say if 0 then make it = 1?Start Free Trial
