The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Selecting from Audit Table

Asked by comfocus in MS SQL Server

Tags: , ,

Hello experts.
I need help with selecting from data from Audit Table which has the following strucure

Employee_ID   old_value    new_value    field_name  transaction_type   transaction_time
---------------  ------------    -------------     ------------   --------------------    --------------------

100                  null             100                 Employee_ID    I                             2007-10-10
100                  null             Williams          Surname          I                             2007-10-10
100                  null             James             Forename       I                              2007-10-10
100                  null              IT                   Department     I                              2007-10-10
100                  IT                 Admin            Department    U                             2007-10-11
100                  Admin         HR                  Department   U                             2007-10-12

200                  null             200                Employee_ID    I                             2007-10-10
200                 null               Martin           Surname          I                             2007-10-10
200                  null             Adam            Forename       I                              2007-10-10
200                  null              IT                 Department     I                              2007-10-10

The above data shows a record of two newly created employees (100 and 200). For employee 100, the department was updated twice, but for employee 200 the department was not updated.

I want to extract the data in the following format.

Employee_ID           Surname                 Forename                       Department
-------------              ------------              --------------                     ---------------
100                          Williams                 James                                  HR
200                         Martin                       Adman                                IT

so that if the same field was updated once or more, the last updated record of the same employee record is extracted e.g Dept HR for employee 100. However if the same field was inserted but not updated. then only display the inserted record.

Im stuck with how to do this.  Your help greatly appreciated.
