The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

SQL 2000 and vb.net 2.0 application timing out - occasionally

Asked by skrile in MS SQL Server, .Net Editors & IDEs

I'm developing a .Net 2.0 app that makes ample use of SqlDataConnection objects.  The application runs fine on my machine for a while.  However, after a while of use (clicking on pages, hitting the database, pulling records, adding, editing, etc) non-select queries stop working.  So, pages that ask for information through SELECT statements or from Stored Procs with Select statements work just fine, but if I try to write data to a table, the thing times out.

I've used SQL Profiler to try and trace what the heck is going on.

When things are working as they should, there are about 8000 rows created saying Lock:Acquired Lock:Released by the LoginName used by my application...is that "normal".  I have about three database connections that occur on the particular page I'm working with.  Two are simple selects, but the third is a Stored proc that does a Add, Edit, or Delete depending on what variables are passed to it.

When things fail, the two select connections work fine, but the Stored proc call eventually times out.  Duration in Profiler says something like 40000 and takes a while to show up.

How can I further trouble shoot this.  I'm a bit nervous about this because I don't know whether I'm just jacking because I'm in a development environment, or if there is a "leak" somewhere that is causing the db to lock down the table I'm trying to write records to.Start Free Trial
