The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Login failed for user Reason: The password of the account must be changed.

Asked by -Dman100- in MS SQL Server, SQL Server 2005

Tags: , , , ,

we just virtualized our sql server development box and installed SQL Server 2005 standard edition.  Previously we were running sql server 2000.  We moved over all the databases and I setup the logins for the database...same as they were before.

I tried to run one of the apps and recieved the following error message:

Login failed for user 'login_name'.  Reason: The password of the account must be changed.

so, I went to the security node and drilled down into the properties for that login.  I tried to uncheck 'Enforce password policy' and 'Enforce password Expiration'.

Then I recieved this error:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
------------------------------

Alter failed for Login 'login_name'.  (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.3042.00&EvtSrc=Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.ExceptionTemplates.FailedOperationExceptionText&EvtID=Alter+Login&LinkId=20476

------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

------------------------------

The CHECK_POLICY and CHECK_EXPIRATION options cannot be turned OFF when MUST_CHANGE is ON. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15128)

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=09.00.3042&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=15128&LinkId=20476

------------------------------
BUTTONS:

OK
------------------------------

Then I tried to recheck the 'Enforce password policy' and 'Enforce password expiration' and recieved the following error:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
------------------------------

Change password failed for Login 'login_name'.  (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.3042.00&EvtSrc=Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.ExceptionTemplates.FailedOperationExceptionText&EvtID=Change+password+Login&LinkId=20476

------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

------------------------------

Password validation failed. The password does not meet Windows policy requirements because it is not complex enough. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15118)

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=09.00.3042&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=15118&LinkId=20476

------------------------------
BUTTONS:

OK
------------------------------

I'm not sure what is going on?  Something to do with user group policies on the box, maybe??  I'm not a network administration, so I'm randomly guessing?

Any help with this is appreciated.
