Question

Need SMTP stored procedure that supports LOGIN authentication

Asked by: dplittle

I've been using xp_smtp_sendmail (http://www.sqldev.net/xp/xpsmtp.htm) very successfully for over four years in my SQL Server 2000 DTS packages. I have many jobs that run on a regualr basis and send files off to multiple locations using our ISP's STMP only. I was never able to successfully set up or use SQLMail to accomplish the same goal.

Unfortunately, we recenly changed or T1 provider and their SMTP server reguires authentication. xp_smtp_sendmail does not support these paramters. I need another solution to send these files in a hurry! I've done some searching and seen other potential solutions but none seem to support authentication of they require more coding than I have time to do right now.

Right now I simply have environmental variables I can set for the packages and then use one simple call to xp_smtp_sendmail passing it the parameters. Does anyone else know of a comparable solution that has LOGIN and PASSWORD parameters?

Thanks

David

Looks like you'll need to uncomment and hard code/parameterise these lines in the referenced SP:

--EXEC @iHr = sp_OASetProperty @iMessageObjId,
--'Configuration.Fields("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/SendUserName").Value',null

--EXEC @iHr = sp_OASetProperty @iMessageObjId,
--'Configuration.Fields("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/SendPassword").Value',null

Thanks. I haven't forgotten y'all. I've been on the road and haven't had the chance to test this. I had seen this sproc before but was just hoping there was an extended sproc out there to replace xp_smtp_sendmail (or even better swtill an update to xp_smtp_sendmail). I will try to get to these today.

I still haven't been able to make this solution work ... partly time ... mostly higher priorities. Still open though.

I modified the [sp_SQLSMTPMail] code for dynamically adding SendUserName & SendPassword, which plugs the values, but when executing the proc from sql server I get this error
===
Error updating Message configuration fields.
ADODB.Fields
Fields update failed. For further information, examine the Status property of individual field objects.
===
If you log into VS.NET for example and execute the proc it works perfectly ...
I figured you might want this heads up before plunging into the code

I guess you'll need  to do exactly that.... alter sp_SQLSMTPMail to display the status property of each field. Also maybe inspect the errors collection.

Often when it works one way (VS.Net) and not through SQL Server, its because the SQL Server and/or SQL Agent service account doesn't have sufficient privileges. To verify this you can ~temporarily~ set both of these accounts to domain admins and see if that helps.

by: firstmalonePosted on 2008-03-27 at 04:00:06ID: 21220033

Yes, as domain administrator executing the program there is not a problem, but of course, at that point, the SMTP Mail configuration is still being completely ignored.
I will post as soon as I work out exactly what the minimum security requirements are for this solution to function. If anyone else happens to have already do this, please let us all know what they are. One client may also be switching up to SQL Server 2005, so I may end up with a new problem/solution for them, but I still have a good many clients running on SQL Server 2000, most of them with 7.0 compatible databases... more later.

None of the suggestions actually answered the question so I'd favor having the question closed and points returned.

Unfortunately this didn't really work in our environment but it looks like the only solution. I had to rewrite all my projects to use ftp instead of mailing. Better that then implementing Exchange.
