Question

Trying to run a trigger from a vb app and getting error New transaction cannot enlist in the specified transaction coordinator

Asked by: running32

I have a trigger which to run with a linked server.  On the Test SQL Server the trigger runs just fine but on the production server I am getter the error message New transaction cannot enlist in  the specified transaction coordinator.  I have read something about the MSDTC service not running, but it is running on the production server.  What else could I look for?   Thank you for your help

Look in Services for the MSDTC (distributed transaction coordinator)...make sure it is started

by: running32Posted on 2008-03-26 at 06:00:15ID: 21211088

Yes, it is started.  It also has Auto-start service when OS starts.  But I did stop and start the server and it is still not working.

Is it running on both machines (local and the remote one for the linked server)?

by: running32Posted on 2008-03-26 at 06:10:47ID: 21211183

yes it is running on both computers.

What do you mean to run a trigger?

by: running32Posted on 2008-03-26 at 09:15:37ID: 21213239

I created a trigger to update a field on a linked server.  When straddress is updated on the server the tigger is fired and address is updated on the linked server.

by: ZberteocPosted on 2008-03-26 at 10:11:59ID: 21213935

Are you sure that on production the linked server is set correctly?

by: running32Posted on 2008-03-26 at 12:38:48ID: 21215353

Yes, I can query the linked server just fine.

by: ZberteocPosted on 2008-03-26 at 15:24:35ID: 21217046

If it runs on Test sever but not on production ther3 has to be a difference in the settings, environments, permissions, etc. Is not possible to tell from here. Try to replicate all these on prod and then run again. Recreate the linked server on prod.

On test does it actually update the table on the linked server?

by: pcurtis_expertPosted on 2008-03-27 at 08:07:06ID: 21222195

Are the Database names and table names the same in Prod as they were in Dev?  Is it possible that your Prod trigger is pointing to the Dev server?

by: running32Posted on 2008-03-27 at 08:34:50ID: 21222492

Good point but I changed the linked server names when I tried to run it live.   Thanks
