If there are multiple people using the database, would scope_identity give the wrong ID or is it defined by session?

members
groups
group_map
Members is a simple table that holds user information. Their ID is auto incremented.
Groups is a table that holds groups that members could be in. Each group is given an ID that is also auto incremented. This is pretty much static. The group list is already filled and ID's given.
Group_Map is a two column table that has the ID column from Members and the ID column from Groups.
I need to be able to put the Members ID into the Group_Map. This becomes hard when the ID doesn't exist, say, when adding a new person since the ID in Members is auto increment. How do I get the next ID? Adding 1 wont work because if one of the users out of members is deleted it would throw the whole index off.

well, why don't you just get the id after you insert into the member table?
insert statement
select scope_identity() --newly inserted ID
