.TRN File WAY too big. Help reduce size.

Asked by ChrisHelvey in MS SQL Server

We have an SQL database 1.9G in size (OK) and after some trouble with the SQL maintenance plan, the .trn file grew so large it has become a problem (40G.)
1st and foremost, we need to reduce the size of this file. We don't have a need to restore to a time other than the last full SQL backup, so I don't think I need to keep transaction backup files.

This database is in use 8AM-5PM EST and we have it set to do a full SQL backup before the tape drive runs at night, and it is (now) backing up transaction logs to a directory where those backup files will be systematically deleted.

Can (or should) I make changes in the properties of the database? (The transaction log is set to "automatically grow" files as needed.)

I believe I also need to put this into "Simple" backup made, but am not aware of how to do this.

Can I do any of this while it is otherwise being used?

I would like help on explicitly what to do to accomplish these tasks.
