16 characters SQL Server Name

Asked by TAB8 in MS SQL Server

I have installed a default (next next next) SQL2005 server on a Windows 2003 SP2 base server. The server name is 16 characters long (SERVERSQLSPROD01)

Do you know why the instance name of SQL is truncated to 15 characters post install?

I can connect to SERVERSQLSPROD0 and SERVERSQLSPROD01 via ODBC

The issue is what happens when i install SERVERSQLSPROD02 ?

Has anyone come across this before ?

Having a shorter name is not a solution to this question :)
