Moving/Copying MS SQL Database to a new server. Easiest way

Here is the problem. We are moving databases from one box to another, and unfortunately we don't have global include files.

We have a few applications that have ODBC connections to the database and I'm trying to figure out the best/easiest way to do this.

The Server we are taking the data off of is 32 bit and we upgraded to 64...don't think it should be an issue but I'm mentioning it anyway. What my plan was to do a backup and restore - Or just copy MDF / LDF - attach DB. Which do you recommend?

The big issue is this. All these applications refer to the DB...so I was wondering if I could just replace our current server with the new one, and give it the same IP, drive letters, machine name, ect. so that we wouldn't need to go into the code behind the applications and change them manually. If this CAN be done what do I need to make sure is the same as the old server? Thanks!Start Free Trial
