The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

SQL Server Speed Issue

Asked by wsturdev in MS SQL Server

I am not a DBA by trade, but I am responsible for a SQL Server 2005 installation on a server that also runs a couple of web sites.  The number of people who interact with the server, either from Access-based front ends or via the web at any given time is extremely low, maybe 15 maximum.  Many times, late in the evening, I am the only one running anything.

The databases have hundreds of tables and views.  I run numerous queries against views that frequently are nested 5 and 6 levels deep.  (e.g. View 1 gets data from View 2 which gets data from view 3, etc.)

The amount of data is relatively small: thousands of records in key tables versus millions.  Recently, it was suggested that I run traces and then run Database Engine Tuning Advisor, which I have done.  It has come up with numerous suggestions for indices, which I have created.

Every night, I run a job to update statistics on every database.  Every weekend, I run a job to update (or recreate?) all indexes.

Still, some of my queries take upwards of 10 seconds to retrieve a few hundred records, maybe 2,000 characters of data per record.  I keep looking at how fast Google searches are, and they certainly have much more data than I do!

All of my apps run over the interenet, with a VPN connection, so I can understand a bit of slowdown there.  But my server is extremely fast and uncrowded.  I am the only one who uses it.  The number of users interacting with the server at any one time is extremely low.

When I RDC onto the server and run the queries there, the internet/VPN time is eliminated, but on a 10-second query, I only gain 2 seconds -- it still takes 8 seconds to run.

So, what other things can I do to speed up my queries?   I need to know that I have exhausted all normal DBA kinds of things before I go to the trouble of rewriting them or reconfiguring them into SPROCS.
