Update Multiple rows with different values from second table

I have 2 tables contact1 and contact2.  the contact1.acct field matches the contact2.acct field.
I need to pull the contact1.id values into contact2.id fields.  How can I accomplish this on SQL Server 2000.

Update Contact2
Set contact2.ID  =  contact1.id
What next.....?

Is your Contact2.ID an Identity column?  If so, the provided query will not work unless you wrap it in some additional SQL:

SET IDENTITY_INSERT IdentityTable ON.
 
UPDATE Contact2
SET contact2.ID  =  contact1.id
FROM contact2 
INNER JOIN contact1 
ON contact1.id  = contact2.id; 
 
SET IDENTITY_INSERT IdentityTable OFF.

Update Contact2

No it was not an identity column and thanks for your input.  I know you would have solved had I been better at explaining the problem.  My lack of sql skills and knowhow.  Thanks

I new yours would not work because contact2.ID fields is empty so no match would have been found.  I was trying to populate contact2.id field with values from contact1.id field based on contact1.acct and contact2.acct which already match.
