Question

Passing an Array to SQL Select statement Where Clause

Asked by: mgordon-spi

Hi All,

I have a fairly straightforward SQL statement that selects a number of records from a table. I have recently converted this statement into a stored procedure and passed a few parameters with no problem at all.

I have now arrived at a situation wherein I need to pass an array of values to this stored procedure and have them exclude rows returned based on ID.

The Select is Basic Enough - Select ID, sCompanyName from tCompanies but I need to then exlcude Values based on ID, I guess a "Where ID is Not Including @ArrayOfID" would do but I'm not sure how to code this. Its important that @ArrayOfID is a Parameter that I can pass the procedure from a VB.NET DataAdapter. I was thinking that Comma Seperated values would work?

Perhaps you can use table-valued parameters: http://www.sqlteam.com/article/sql-server-2008-table-valued-parameters.

I must apologise - I have put this question in SQL server 2008 and we are operating SQL server 2005. this is a bit of ignorance on my behalf.

i'll try to change that.

Looks like the above will only function in 08 as well.

:-) No problem. Let's try another way. See if you find anything interesting in the article by Erland Sommarskog: http://www.sommarskog.se/arrays-in-sql-2005.html. However, you will not find any information on the client side (VB.NET).

Create the attached function and use it like this:

select * from yourtable where yourcolumn not in (select dbo.ParmstoList(@ArrayOfID, ','))

Basically the function will convert the comma separated list to a table so you can make the comparison using "not in". Please note that you can pass another delimiter other than the comma.

If the column being compared is not a varchar, then change the Value column type in the function.

CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[ParmsToList] (@Parameters varchar(500), @delimiter varchar(10) )
returns @result TABLE (Value varchar(100))
AS
begin
    declare @dx varchar(9)
    -- declare @loops int
     --set @loops = 0

     DECLARE @TempList table
          (
          Value varchar(100)
          )

     if @delimiter is null set @delimiter = ' '
     if len(@delimiter) < 1 set @delimiter = ' '
     set @dx = left(@delimiter, len(@delimiter)-1)

     DECLARE @Value varchar(8000), @Pos int

     SET @Parameters = LTRIM(RTRIM(@Parameters))+ @delimiter
     SET @Pos = CHARINDEX(@delimiter, @Parameters, 1)

     IF REPLACE(@Parameters, @delimiter, @dx) <> ''
     BEGIN
          WHILE @Pos > 0 -- AND @Loops < 100
          BEGIN
               --set @loops = @loops + 1
               SET @Value = LTRIM(RTRIM(LEFT(@Parameters, @Pos - 1)))
               IF @Value <> ''
               BEGIN
INSERT INTO @TempList (Value) VALUES (CAST(@Value AS varchar)) --Use Appropriate conversion
               END
               SET @Parameters = SUBSTRING(@Parameters, @Pos+ len(@delimiter), 8000)
               SET @Pos = CHARINDEX(@delimiter, @Parameters, 1)

          END
     END
     INSERT @result
     SELECT value
        FROM @TempList
     RETURN
END

Updating ralmada's code:

ralmada, a table valued function is used like a table.

select * from yourtable where yourcolumn not in (select value from dbo.ParmstoList(@ArrayOfID, ','))
