Question

"setup error" attempting to install .net framework 2.0 and 3.5

Asked by: crmsharepoint

Greetings,
We're attempting to install SQL 2005 on Windows Server 2003.  When we run SQL installl, it of course requires .net frame 2.0.

1) However, when the SQL install goes to install .net framework 2.0 it gives us the following error:

"setup error"

2) So then, I tried to install .net framework 2.0, as well as 3.5 by directly downloading from Microsoft.  Both of those fail with the same error message though.

3) Lastly, I notice in add/remove programs that .netframework 2.0 and 3.5 are already installed.

So......question....

1) What could be causing this "setup error" message.  The logs don't really lead us to anything conclusive.
2) Why isnt't the sql installer seeing the the frameworks are already installed?

BTW - yes I am installing with an account that has local admin privilges on the box.

Thanks in advance.

Kindly check whether it fails because of MSXML 6 SP 2 in your machine.
If you have MSXML 6 SP2, then you have to uninstall MSXML 6.0 SP2 using Windows Installer Cleanup utility given below:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Retry the installation which should work now.

.Net Framework probably needs to be repaired.  My guess is that it is installed, although not registered properly.  SQL doesn't see its there, and so it fires off the installation for .net framework, which then gives you an error because it see's its already installed.

Try this link for various ways to remove / repair / re-install:

check if the SQL Server you are trying install on the cluster and the dot net framework may not be present in the other node.

I uninstalled XML SP2 using the cleanup tool.  No dice the problem still exists.

****For the .net framework, how to you tell which version you have?****  It's not evident in Control Panel.

The server is 64 bit, with 64 bit W2k3OS, and attempting to install 64 bit SQLServer.

By the way - for "how do you tell which version of .net framework" I'm referring to how do you tell which architecture 32-bit or 64-bit?

The frameworks were already installed by the server ops folks.

Thanks.

Try uninstalling .Net framework in the machine and try installing 64 bit versions of .Net Framework 2.0 and 3.5 along with their latest Service packs in your machine and it should work fine now..

Greetings - quick update.  I've tried uninstalling the XML SP2 using the uninstaller as previously mentioned.  No dice.

I've also uninstalled all of the .net frameworks that were on the box.  (2.0, 3.0, 3.5).  Still no dice.  SQL Setup fails with the same error.  I'm left with now trying to reinstall the 64-bit .Net framework 2.0 and 3.5.

BTW - I've also attached a screen shot of the error to this post.

Thanks.

As you see the error is:

Errors occurred during the installation.

The specified image file did not contain a resource section.

Thanks in advance.

Kindly try installing Windows Installer 3.1

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=889482fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&displaylang=en

And then .Net Framework 2.0

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=b44a0000-acf8-4fa1-affb-40e78d788b00&DisplayLang=en

and then its SP1

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=029196ED-04EB-471E-8A99-3C61D19A4C5A&displaylang=en

Now it should work..

If any of the installation fails, then use Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to uninstall either 32 / 64 bit corrupted versions in the machine..

quick follow-up...this happened in another environment and we discovered that the problem seems to be that .net is not set to allowed in IIS.  Setting it to allowed solved the problem.
