Question

Modify the sysusers table in SQL Server 2005

Asked by: ourguru

There used to be a setting in SQL Server 2000 to "Allow modifications to be made directly to the system catalogs", this would allow you to list the contents of the sysusers table and delete rows.

I cannot find the same setting or where I can list and modify the sysusers table in SQL Server 2005.

Before I look up where, I ahve to ask why? Modifying these tables is considered a bad idea, and not supported by Microsoft.

by: ourguruPosted on 2007-03-05 at 11:13:16ID: 18656566

We are moving our proprietary software's databases from one server to another.  The securities for the app are stored in the app's db.  But to get the users re-added, we have to wipe them out of the sysusers table, and then readd them through the application.

No, you don't. SQL Logins can be migrated between servers without direct modification.

I looked at this, but it looks like it wants to get the sysuser table info from the MASTER database.  We are only looking to get at the sysuser table from each individual database.

by: NightmanPosted on 2007-03-05 at 11:26:09ID: 18656651

I have successfully used this to migrate between SQL 2000 and SQL 2005, as well as between instances of SQL 2005.

Run a test if you like to satisfy yourself - this is the recommended (and supported) method.

Also remember that the login is a server account, and the sysuser is a database account. Both are required for a valid SQL Login to work (and this method preserves the SIDS, making it relatively simple).

I really am not trying to argue, I really don't know what I am talking about, but....

If I look at the sysuser table in MASTER and the sysuser table in my database, they are different.  All of the accounts listed in the MASTER are also in my database plus all of my database users.  My users don't appear in the MASTER sysuser table...

You can also have SQL logins mapped to database users, so it can get confusing.

Humour me, and set up a local instance of SQL (even SQL Express, assuming that the db file is smaller than 4GB), and test this. It is *not* recommended to modify these tables directly.

by: ourguruPosted on 2007-03-05 at 11:45:03ID: 18656776

Will do, however, the DB is 4.5GB, so I will test on my SQL Server 2005 server and let you know.

Thanks

Modifucation of system tables in SQL Server is not possible. This functionality has been removed.

It's a pleasure - good luck with your server migration.
