Question

SQL 2005 - Shrink log file too big

Asked by: matanguay

i have a server that runs sql 2005 and the logfile has grown ridiculously high, which means the logfile is now 80gb.

i have a dev server with sql 2005 on which the logfile is 10gb.

i want to shrink and i was told to simply run a SHRINK and that should work. i try on the dev server first, and when i run the ''basic shrink'' to simply remove empty space, it takes it down to 8gb, but i want to have the logfile smaller.
i then run shrink again and i see an option to specify the logsize, so i specify the log to 3gb, but it does not shrink it down.

what should i do ?

you need to back up the database first - shrink will only remove logs that have been backed up

by: matanguayPosted on 2007-04-20 at 05:27:27ID: 18945715

to give more context, here is what the shrink file says :

TYPE : LOG
FILEGROUP NA
FILENAME : GPDBLOG.LDF
LOCATION ...
CURRENTLY ALLOCATED SPACE : 8265
AVAILABLE FREE SPACE : 7741.43 (93%)

SHRINK ACTION :
RELEASE UNUSED SPACE               (i ran this and it reduced from 10-8 gb)
REORGANIZE : SIZE : 3000mb ( i ran this and it did not do anything
EMTPY AND MOVE TO ANOTHER FILE (i ran this and it did not do anything either)

hope it helps a bit

so for the big one i need to backup 80gb ???

by: matanguayPosted on 2007-04-20 at 05:28:08ID: 18945718

or it will backup only the main db and then the log will be able to be deleted ?

by: angelIIIPosted on 2007-04-20 at 05:28:55ID: 18945721

is the database recovery mode SIMPLE ?
YES -> solution:
  * if you cannot shrink the logfile, you simply have to ensure you run some transactions, and retry the DBCC SHRINKFILE.

NO ->
do you run regulary full AND transaction log backup on that databse
YES -> the log file should not have grown that big, unless you have REALLY alot of transactions, and the transaction log backup interval is too large
   solition :
   * reduce the transcation log backup intervals, and ensure that transactions are not too big.

 NO ->
that is the problem. implement transaction log backups, and then refer to the above

the one that has grown out of proportion is the warehouse db which is about 10gb in size and the logfile is 80gb, but we do no do transactional backups since the warehouse is just a copy of prod taken daily and exported to it...

i'll implement this log backup to help on this.

thanks.

by: matanguayPosted on 2007-04-20 at 05:40:37ID: 18945794

on the production server there is about 12dbs, and two are warehouses, and 3 are dev dbs.

i do not want to set transaction log backups each 15mins as this will slow down the server.

what do you suggest to make this easier ?

by: PFrogPosted on 2007-04-20 at 05:45:15ID: 18945828

I would implement a daily log backup overnight,

by: matanguayPosted on 2007-04-20 at 05:45:27ID: 18945831

also i ran the backup on the dev db, which worked :), but then when i did a file shrink it did not do anything.

should i use the wizard or use manually the    dbcc shrinkfile

In case you overlooked my comment, please check it out to understand how it works.
an additional word of explanation:
the sql server transaction log file is in short a circular buffer, and when the current pointer is located at the end of the file, then shrinking of the log won't do anything.
transaction log backup (not the full backup alone) + doing some transactions will get that pointer moved to the beginning of the file, then another log backup and then the shrink will work,.

by: matanguayPosted on 2007-04-20 at 06:04:07ID: 18945975

the DBCCSHRINKFILE says this :

dbcc shrinkfile ('Logfile.ldf',1000)

DBLD     FIELD          CURRENT  MINIMUM USED       ESTIMATED
12      2      1057992      2560      1057992      2560

by: angelIIIPosted on 2007-04-20 at 06:10:00ID: 18946024

that output means you still have to run the tlog backup first

by: matanguayPosted on 2007-04-20 at 06:59:25ID: 18946388

it just worked... thanks :)
