The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Login failed for User SA Error 18456
Tags: sql, 18456, login, failed, user
Hi there,

One of our engineers has installed SQL 2005 Express on a customers PC that uses XP SP2.

I am trying to set up a remote connection from our offices but a this time I cannot even logon to the
server using the SA account locally whilst using RDP to the customers site !

I can logon using windows authentication.

When I right click the server and then select the security tab SQL and Windows Authentication is ticked.
I've checked the connections tab an this allows Remote Connections.
I've looked at SA in the security tab and have set the password to what I want.

No effect.

Using the Config Manager I have disabled all protocols other than TCP/IP

When I restarted all the services and have tried to logon again but get the error message
Login Failed for User SA error 18465.

This is probably very simple but I cannot seem to spot what is wrong.  Can anyone help

According to http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms131024.aspx this is a password problem (too long).

Hey PaulEll...

Actually, if I'm reading this accurately, Olemo transposed 18456 to 18465 in matching this up with the "password too long" error message.

Here's some info from an MSN staff person on debugging a login error:

http://blogs.msdn.com/sql_protocols/archive/2006/02/21/536201.aspx

The key is starting with the server log to find out what the Error State is, which will tell you whether SQL 2005 is having a problem with the user ID, password, or whatever.

SQL Browser Service

In general when a client connects remotely to a SQL Server named instance the client does not know the port that the instance is listening on(you can work around this by configuring SQL Server named instances to listen on a specific port and then specifying that port in the connection string in the format <servername>,<port number>)

So when an application attempts to connect to a named instance in the form <servername>\<instancename> the client connection needs to be directed to the correct port. In SQL Server 2000 one of the running services had a built in listener that received the named instance connection requests and redirected them appropriately.

In SQL Server 2005 this functionality has been moved to a dedicated listener service, that service is SQLBrowser.

SQLBrowser also performs another service, that of SQL Server Discovery, its common in many UIs from Microsoft and others to have the ability to browse for instances of SQL Server running locally or remotely, again in SQL Server 2000 this was handled by one of the running instances of SQL Server, in SQL Server 2005 this is handled by the SQLBrowser Service.

Thus the SQLBrowser Service must be started to be able to discover any instance on the machine, and also to connect to named instances through protocols other than shared memory. If network protocols are not enabled via the setup switch then the browser service is not set to autostart.

HI there,

Thanks for the posts.

Karin - I followed the link and can use the sqlcmd lines to connect but I still cannot connect using the server manager using SQL authentication via user SA. I can connect using windows authentication.

SQL Server (SQLExpress) is running
SQL  Server Browser is running
SQL Full Text is running

The SQL Error log indicates that I have the wrong password - but as I set this and have changed this
(just to make sure) I can't see that this is the problem.

There is a line in the error log which may be important:

The SQL Network Interface library could not register the Service Principal Name (SPN) for the SQL Server service. Error: 0x54b, state: 3. Failure to register an SPN may cause integrated authentication to fall back to NTLM instead of Kerberos. This is an informational message. Further action is only required if Kerberos authentication is required by authentication policies.

I've set the surface error manager to allow remote connections via TCP/IP

The Config Manager is set as follows

IP1
Active: yes
Enabled: no
IP Address 192.168.1.101
TCP Dynamic Port: 0
TCP Port: Left Blank

IP2
Active Yes
Enabled No
IP Address 127.0.0.1
TCP Dynamic Port 0
TCP Port Left Blank

IPAll
TCP Dynamic Ports 1725
TCP Port left blank

Client Protocols:
default 1433
Enabled Yes
Keep Alive 30000
Keep Alive interval 1000

Its not the problem in your case

Just a thought, when trying to connect as SA, take note Sql2005 passwords are case sensitive

Thanks for that.

I'll go back an change the password again and make sure that it is lowercase.

I'm running out of ideas though.
