removing db mirror in MSSQL 2005

Hi, I set up database mirroring and subsequently turned it off on the primary. However, the secondary server (there is no witness) is still in a 'mirrored state'. ALTER DATABASE statements are not accepted by the server including ALTER DATABASE <db> SET PARTNER OFF.
At this stage, I only need to drop the secondary database and then restart mirroring with a copy of the primary.
Does somebody have an idea and some experience on switching back and forth between primary and seconday. Any help is welcome

How did you turned it off ? Just stopped the fist instance ?

You can manually failover to the mirror. Right clcik on Primary->Tasks->Mirror; under this you have an option called 'Failover" which will failover to the mirror.

You are (well ... were) running in high protection mode I guess ?

Let me know how you stopped it, than I can try to reproduce it. What version are you running, SP1, SP2 ?
I have my servers at 9.0.3054 (SP2 + KB934458)
