I had Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 installed already. I just installed the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005 and tried to open my mdf file. I get an error message that says:
There is no editor available for 'C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\intran
Make sure the application for the file type (.mdf) is installed.
Did I do something wrong? I just clicked through the defaults in the Management Studio Express install.
How can I get this to work?

just to avoid any possible confusion:
in sql management studio, connect to your instance, and open the databases folder.
in the context menu of that folder, choose "attach database".
that will open a form, that will look like this:

management studio is the management interface for sql 2005 database instance, it does not matter if you have Express, Standard or enterprise Edition.

so you did not try to attach it, did you?
1. Open Microsoft SQL Management Studio Express
2. Click the Connect button to connect to the Data Engine with Server Name: tech\sqlexpress
3. After it connects, File > Open > File
4. The Open File windows pops up
5. Browse out to C:\i netpub\wwwroot\intranet\ap
6. Click Open
7. Error window pops up and says:
There is no editor available for 'C:\i netpub\wwwroot\intranet\ap
Make sure the application type for file (.mdf) is installed.
Coincidently, when I try to open the database in Visual Web Developer I get an error message that says:
Generated user instances is disabled. Use sp_configure 'user instances enabled' to generate user instances
I figured it out. I did not attach the mdf file to my database instance. If I would have read what you said in the first post instead of reading what I thought you said I would have gotten there a lot sooner. Thanks for the help. On a side note... The other error went away when I reinstalled SQL Server Express. Thanks.

search the drive for intranet.mdf and then attach it from the location you find it.
