Question

Getting around the Group By Clause

Friends,

I have a qry that, in order to work, wants all the fields in the group by clause.  I don't want to do all these fields, because it would NOT give the result set I'm looking for.

Here is my qry:

Select ResultItemID, SUM(Laptime), LapCount, Flag From Passings Where DecoderID=100 AND LoopID=1 AND LapCount>0 AND RunID=38
Group By ResultItemID, LapCount, Flag

I do need to group by ResultItemID, but I don't want to group with the other two fields.

Is there an alternative, or am I going about this the wrong way?

Please explain. If you don't wish to group by LapCount and Flag then what value(s) would you expect to see in those columns? You presumably could have multiple values of LapCount and Flag for each ResultItemID, so how do you want to determine which value(s) to return?

It would help if you could post a CREATE TABLE statement together with some sample data and your required end result.

You can use group functions on them such as:

Select ResultItemID, SUM(Laptime), max(LapCount) as lapcount, max(Flag) as flag
 From Passings
Where DecoderID=100 AND LoopID=1 AND LapCount>0 AND RunID=38
Group By ResultItemID

You could set an aggregate function on both LapCount and Flag fields.
But that might influence the result set. Can you post a required result set so we can work towards that ?

Hi,

Can you post some sample data from the Passings table, and the result set you currently get with your query from that sample, and where it differs from what you want.

I started to work on a query that will does what you want, but need to see the data first ...

If you just want to see the sum for laptime group by resultitemid, then

Select a.ResultItemID, b.sum_Laptime, a.LapCount , a.Flag
 From Passings a, ( select ResultItemID, SUM(Laptime) as sum_laptime from Passings group by ResultItemID) b
Where a.DecoderID=100 AND a.LoopID=1 AND a.LapCount>0 AND a.RunID=38
    and a.ResultItemID = b.ResultItemID

Hi geotiger,

If sum( laptime ) is being used correctly by indy500fan, then your query is going to give multiple rows with the same total.

The new style join syntax is preferred ... :-)
