The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

I am trying to restore a database on a different machine and it's not working.  I'm getting the error:  The backed-up database has on-disk structure version 611.  The server supports version 539 and cannot restore or upgrade this database.
RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3169)

As far as I can tell both machine are running SqlServer 2005.  What could be causing this problem and is there any work arounds?  I'm fairly new to this but have successfully done a procedure like this before.  Thanks in advance.

It does indicate that you're trying to restore a SQL 2005 backup to a SQL 2000 instance.  You need to verify the version of SQL on the restore server.

Sometimes, beta copies of SQL 2005 will exhibit this error as well.

From Help > About:  Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express
Version: 9.00.2.47.00

This matches exactly from machine to machine.  Is there something else I'm not doing correctly that would give this error.  I'd like to not have to manually create all of the tables, store procedures and import the data.  Thanks

That sounds like SQL 2005 sp1 which should be ok.  What is the compatibility level of the database you're trying to restore into?

Oops...you have me the version of your client tools, not the database.  Run this query against your target database...tell me what you get.

Are you sure that you are restoring to a 2005 instance? You could have a 2000 instance as the default. On the server where you are restoring the database, are there any other instances of SQL Server? What command are you using? You sound as if you are using SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Select the database that you want to restore into and create a new query.

USE <database name>

SELECT @@VERSION

Ok...I'm learning some new stuff here.  They are incompatible, thanks to cmangus....I checked the compatibility level under options on the machine I'm copying too and It's only Sql 2000.  I ran the query  and the machine I'm trying to restore to has:Microsoft SQL Server  2000 - 8.00.2039 (Intel X86)   May  3 2005 23:18:38   Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation  Desktop Engine on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2) while my local machine is:  Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3042.00 (Intel X86)
      Feb  9 2007 22:47:07
      Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation
Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)

I guess I'm up the creek on this now, huh?

One way to move a database from 2005 back to 2000 is:

Script the structure of the database from the 2005 computer
Run the script on the 2000 computer.

Use DTS or SSIS to move the data (usually an Import/Export wizard works fine).

I agree with ptjcb.  Assuming you haven't done any coding to features specific to 2005 DTS or SSIS should get you on your 2000 machine.

Ok, I tried to script the database by right clicking the database>Script Database As etc.  This method does not do anything as far as copying the tables and store procedures over.  Is this the method you were referring to ptjcb?

Also, I have no idea what DTS SSIS is....time for google...
