Question

Script to copy files from SQL server to multiple servers

Asked by: lbarnett419

I need a script, and where it is best the run the script to do this:
Source:
Copy *.* files from 99 different folders on a MSSQL server: \SCHLPROG\FILES\SQLFROM\DATA7098
                                                                                                                                               \DATA7099
                                                                                                                                               \DATA7055

Destination:
To 99 different servers: J:\SCHLPROG\files
Where J would represent the following servers and the numbers after the \\ match the numbers on the 1st server (DATA7098, DATA7099, DATA055,etc.)
\\098H-FS33\BAPPS
\\099H-FS33\BAPPS
\\055E-FS33\BAPPS
\\069E-FS33\BAPPS
\\041M-FS33\BAPPS
\\022M-FS33\BAPPS

Hi,

There are a gazillion ways to do this, so can you be more specific as to what you want to achieve.

For instance, updating data from one system to another has all the replication databse mirroring and logshipping options.

Exporting files can be sent to ftp or file shares via batch files or occassionally on well-connected networks files exported directly. Is the data in SQL and needs to be exported, then maybe the destinations can pull the data directly from SQL.

Cheers
  David

No, the files inside the folders are a mdb and idx (MS Access). I need to get those files copied from the original and pasted to the server to which they belong. There is 1 original server and 99 different servers.

EE has so many great folk, that I must have explained this all wrong. Let me try again.
On 1 MS SQL server, I have 99 folders/directories that contain 2 files each. Each of these directories is identified by a unique location number, such as //data7099, //data7055, //data7066, etc.

I have 99 different servers within the same network that I have to transfer those copied files to. So the 2 files from server1/data7099 have to be copied to \\099H-FS33\BAPPS and the 2 files from server1/data7055 have to be copied to \\055H-FS33\BAPPS and so on, until I loop through all the original directories and get the files copied to the destinations. Is this any better? Thank you.

Hi,

Thanks for that.

A loop writing in a scripting system - vbs, js, etc, is likely to be the best bet here.

Thinking about it, it is going to be difficult to do this in a loop, because the source directory doesn't name the server. It implies the server.

That is server1\data7099 -> \\099h-FF33 ... some nasty string manipulation going on here.

But server1\0099h-FF33 -> \\0099h-FF33\bapps would work better.

I'm still interested in why you are copying these files ...

Unfortunately I've gotta run.

Catch ya tomorrow.

Cheers
  David

Ok, I see what you're saying. The files in the 2 directories are placed in the destination server/folder that will eventually be used to update demographic data on persons in an org. Right now we do this nightly through a bat file on a person's local machine. Here is a sample:

The following lines up to DOIT occurs 99 times in the bat file, as the identifier, such as 028E, changes:
echo off

CLS
Echo:
Echo        XXX Ele
Echo:
SET SERVER=
SET SERVER=\\028E-FS33\BAPPS
SET NUM=
SET NUM=012
SET WED=
SET WED=028
SET RETURN=
SET RETURN=012
goto DOIT
:012
NET USE J: /DELETE

The above code loops to DOIT, then loops back to the next server listed in the file:

:DOIT
net use J: %SERVER%
IF ERRORLEVEL 1 GOTO ERROR
echo:
echo         logged into my %server%
echo:

:COPY
echo         Copying from    %wed%
echo         Copying files to dest %server%
echo:
XCOPY L:\SCHLPROG\FILES\SQLFROM\DATA7%bed%\*.*    J:\SERVER
echo:
echo:
echo:

IF ERRORLEVEL 1 GOTO ERROR
GOTO ERRET

:ERRET
GOTO %RETURN%

:ERROR
ECHO %NUM% >>a:\RESULTS.TXT
GOTO ERRET

:END

Hi,

Given the number of source directories and destination servers, this might work better as a data driven solution.

That is, create a flat table with source_server, souce_share, destination_server, destination_share, write a cursor to loop through this and build a dynamic command for xp_cmdshell. You will have to enable xp_commandshell on SQL 2005, as it is a security risk.

If the batch file is working, what is the issue?

Sample code using the data driven approach suggested in the snippet.

Cheers
  David

declare c cursor for

from dbo.CopyToServer

declare @dShare varchar( 1000 )

	fetch next from c into @sServer, @sShare, @dServer, @dShare

	declare @cmd varchar( max )

	set @cmd = 'copy \\' + @sServer + '\' + @sShare + '\*.* \\' + @dServer + '\' + @dShare

deallocate c
