The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How can I use SQL Server Management Studio 2005 to back up MSDE 2000 databases on a different server?

Asked by cohncons in SQL Server 2005

Tags: , , ,

Here's the basic setup:  I have two Windows 2003 x64 Standard servers.  One runs SQL Server 2005 with SQL Server Management Studio 2005.  The other runs SQL Server 2000 MSDE and I've installed SQL Server Management Studio 2005 Express to go with it.

I am a SQL novice and merely install the product for my clients.  I can create a basic maintenance plans but I don't do much else.  However, I'm expert on Windows 2003 Server and networking.

I've created maintenance plans to create backups for the databases on the SQL Server 2005 server.  I tried to create a similar maintenance paln for the databases on the SQL Server 2000 MSDE using a connection to that server.  It sees the databases fine but fails when it runs (I'm still trying to figure out where the logs are so that I can find the exact error).  I figured that the failure was due to the plan trying to run against a remote server, so I downloaded and installed SQL Server Management Studio 2005 Express on the SQL Server 2000 MSDE server but it does not give me the option to do a maintenance plan.

I've seen various articles that talk about coding isql or osql commands to do the backups but I am not a programmer and am uncomfortable doing this (although I may have to dive in and do it if there is no other option).

Is there any way to use either Management Studio Express on the SQL Server 2000 MSDE server or Management Studio on the SQL Server 2005 to accomplish this?Start Free Trial
