The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Connect to remote SQL Server 2005 Express database via ODBC
Tags: Microsoft, SQL Server 2005 Express
I have just created a SQL Server 2005 Express instance running on Windows Server 2003.

I need to connect to this server over the internet using an ODBC connection.  Although I am able to configure an ODBC connection locally and connect to the database, I am unable to connect remotely.  ***The server is set for local and remote connections already***.

I would very much appreciate it if someone could walk me though what needs to be done server side and client side where the ODBC connection resides.

Thank you in advance.

You would need to configure SQL to listen on a specific port and open that port in the firewall on the remote side, but that is not a good idea as it exposes the database to the internet. I would recommend setting up a VPN connecdtion  between the locations/servers.

Thank you for your response kdc415.

For testing purposes, would you please explain how I need to configure SQL Server Express to listen.  I have the ability to open any ports I need to and I have Management Studio installed.

Thanks for your help.

Open the SQL Configuration Manager

Expand Network Configuration and click on Protocols then double-click TCP/IP

Click on the IP Address tab

Set the TCP port for the ip address you're connection to, 1433 is default for higher versions, use a non-standard port (like 1200 or something) to thwart attacks if you're going to expose it. (Not sure about Express, default may be 0 for dynamic?)

You'll need to use TCP/IP to connect, not SQL Native Client - not sure about your client app.

kdc415: "You'll need to use TCP/IP to connect, not SQL Native Client - not sure about your client app."

The client app uses an ODBC connection.  This should be OK because I can set it to TCP correct?

That is fine. Just make sure the port matches what you set on the server. That is found by clicking the Client Connection button in the ODBC config screen. Hope this helps.

I am able to do everything you discuss here. Then configure an ODBC on the local machine and works just fine.  However, once I attempt to connect from another machine I get the attached error.  The server running the sql server instance does not have virus protection or windows firewall running.  The ports for 1433 and 1434 have been forwarded on the router.

I will be happy to give you the points for this b/c it does work locally, it just would be nice to know what is causing my issue?

I assume you're trying to connect using the IP address and not the server name? Unless you have some name resolution ability for the client, you'll have to use the ip address.

If that's not it, I'll need to know more about the network topography. Is the client machine in private address space behind a router? Or have public address behind router? The next step is determining why the packets aren't getting through, or back to the client. Try scanning that port from the client.

Let me know what you find.

Yes, in the ODBC connection under 'which sql server do you want to connect to' I am entering the ip address\sqlexpress.  I have also tried just the ip address with sqlexpress.

The client machine is behind a router with a private address.  I will do some work to see about scanning the server port from client.  I would assume I just need to scan port 1433...and 1434 if I use TCP dynamic ports?

Thank you for your continued assistance.  I will get you my results and hopefully wrap this up soon!
