The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How to install 'Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio' on a Windows XP workstation?

Tags: Microsoft, SQL Server Management Studio, 2005
How do I install 'Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio' on a Windows XP workstation? I want to have a user be able to manage SQL databases from their workstation so they dont need to use the actual server. Is there a way to pull the setup files for this program off my Windows Small Business Server CD's? Or do I need to use the program 'Visual Studio" to do this?

If they do not need to create jobs or use the SQL Agent, they can download the SQL Server Management Studio Express

SQL Server Management Studio is a standalone installation package, like every component in SQL. So open cd drive and go to Setup directory. There you can see lot of msi installation package. That one you want is named SqlRun_Tools.msi, it has abbout 250MB. Just run it on workstations and select admin tools.

If you need to install the SQL Server 2005 Management Studio as a stand-alone, Browse the DVD and find the Tools\Setup folder under the SQL Server install folder. Execute SqlRun_Tools.msi.

I ran the setup file and it gives me the following message with only an "OK" button then the installer quits.

0:Watson 1:1807 2:StreamSupportFiles
3:getBootStrapDirectory 4:3
5:t:\yukon\sql\setup\darwin\sqlcastub\catarget.cpp 6:100
7:sqlcastub.dll 8:sqlrun.msi

Followed by this message;

"A valid destination folder for the install could not be determined."

Anyone heard of this before? I tried it on a different machine to make sure it wasnt an isolated issue. Same exact results on both PC's. (I bumped up the point value to 250 for this question)

Some folks have run into this before and they used the Windows Cleanup Utility

I actually have the clean up utility on my computer already for other reasons. I ran the utility but it didnt find anything related to SQL. (My PC was reformatted a few weeks back and I have no installed anything related to SQL on here) so I dont have anything to uninstall, unless .NET framework is causing problems.

It is a general Windows Installer error. You might check the SQL Setup logs or the Windows Event logs to see if there is something more specific.

You copy only SqlRun_Tools.msi and run it from diferen directory as is mssq as is mssql installation? If yes, try to run installation directly from setup folder on cd. Maybe is it there some dependencies.

I have tried everything I can to get that program to install but it just wont get past that error message. I decided to just use remote desktop to access the program on the main server instead.

03.28.2008 at 03:10AM PDT, ID: 21229058
try to install it on clear machine (virtual machine). You need to have installed .NET2 and 3 framework.

03.28.2008 at 05:33AM PDT, ID: 21229736
I have virtual machine already installed for a different program. I also have .net 2 and 3 installed.

I had the same problem on a XP 64 bit machine that had VS2005 installed and removed. Used my XP  32 bit VPC on the same machine. The VPC never had VS2005 installed and it installed fine.

04.30.2008 at 10:51AM PDT, ID: 21473035
What is VPC?

And I assume VS2005 means Visual Studio 2005?

Both of the computers I have tried it on are Windows XP workstations (32BIT) and neither have had any visual studio software previously installed on them.

Hola,

In 2006 or so, I installed Management Studio on my primary development machine without an issue. At least I don't recall any issues.

I tried several times to install it on a machine today and received an error telling me that one of the components I've selected for LocalSomethingOrOther is already installed.
I even uninstalled some of the SQLExpress stuff to no avail.

Here is an alternate answer to all those above...

Firstly, for what it is worth, I am working on installing the SQL 2005 Management Studio to a W2K3 SP2 Terminal Server running Citrix 4.0

I was first trying the solution suggested of running SQLRun_Tools.msi (where I got the Invalid Path error "A valid destination folder for the install could not be determined")
Instead I went to the root of CD2 and ran setup.exe. Here I got a more useful error: SQL Native Client (a prerequisite) failed to install. But I already had it installed ?!?!
But this error lead me to an MSKB article that suggested uninstalling SQL Native Client and reinstalling would fix it. (Sorry, I can't find the article without the error from setup.exe, now that it is resolved) (Being a terminal server, I would have installed the package from a different source, which would explain the problem).

With SQL Native Client uninstalled I was able to install the Management Studio with no problems.

I'm still testing, but believe I even have the scripted install working with the commandline
setup.exe /qb ADDLOCAL=SQL_Tools90
The options can be modified following the MSDN article "How to: Install SQL Server 2005 from the Command Prompt"

Cheers, Barnaby
(If this fixes the original poster's issue, I'll happily accept points :)

Neither of the workstations have SQL Native Client installed. They were fresh installations of Windows XP SP2.
